Cummins C550D5 Generator for Engineering Project in Scotland

Background

A prominent engineering firm based in Scotland approached YorPower to supply a generator for a prestigious and technically demanding project located on the Scottish East Coast. This marked the first collaboration between YorPower and the client. The project was awarded to YorPower through a competitive tender process, where the Cummins C550D5 generator had been pre-specified by the client.

Solution

YorPower supplied the Cummins generator, engineered to meet the specific environmental challenges of the shoreline site. Located in a coastal/saline environment, the project demanded stringent durability and corrosion resistance measures.

To meet these requirements, the generator was enclosed within a bespoke acoustic container built to marine grade specifications, including:

• C5-M marine grade paint for high corrosion resistance
• Marine-finish stainless steel external fixings and door furniture
• Plated fasteners, stainless steel door stays, and hinges for extended service life in harsh conditions

Technical Highlights

• Noise Control: Achieved exceptionally low noise output of 65 dB(A) @ 1.0M, thanks to custom-designed acoustic attenuation integrated into the container design.
• Control & Integration: Provision for Modbus communication and single-phase auxiliary supply via a link box was included to enable seamless technical integration with the site’s systems.
• Factory Acceptance Test: A comprehensive FAT, including full load bank testing, was carried out at YorPower’s headquarters in Yorkshire, ensuring performance compliance before site delivery.
• Service Preparedness: A site stock of consumables was also provided to support ongoing maintenance and ensure uninterrupted generator performance.

Delivery and Support

From initial enquiry to final delivery, the project progressed on schedule, demonstrating YorPower’s agility in managing technically demanding generator builds. Following delivery, our team completed the installation and commissioning, ensuring the system was fully operational and tailored to the site’s unique requirements.
