YorPower UPS Solution for a Yorkshire College

Background

A prominent college in Yorkshire required an urgent backup power solution for its main data centre, which houses critical servers. Their existing Emerson APM 120KVA UPS had suffered a fault, leaving them vulnerable to power outages. With the academic term still in progress, an immediate solution was essential to prevent disruptions.

The Challenge

The college needed a UPS replacement but faced a lead time of several weeks for a new system. Given the critical nature of their data centre, they could not afford to be without backup power for this duration. YorPower was contacted directly by the college’s maintenance supervisor – who had previously worked with one of our team members on another site – seeking an urgent resolution.

The Solution

To provide uninterrupted protection, YorPower supplied a 120KVA Riello MST UPS on hire, along with one cabinet of 90Ah batteries. This temporary solution ensured the data centre remained secure from potential power failures while awaiting the arrival of the new UPS.

Permanent Installation

Once the new UPS system was ready, YorPower installed a Riello S3T 120KVA UPS with two 90Ah battery cabinets and network monitoring. The installation process took three days, during which:

  • The hire kit was decommissioned and removed.
  • The new system was installed and fully configured.
  • The cable between the UPS and bypass was upgraded to accommodate the new setup.

Ongoing Support

To ensure the long-term reliability of the UPS, the college opted for an ongoing UPS maintenance plan that includes two visits per annum. This proactive approach guarantees optimal performance and longevity of the system.

Outcome

The college now benefits from a robust, high-performance UPS system safeguarding its critical data centre. The hire unit was returned to YorPower HQ, where it was fully serviced, reboxed, and prepared for future hire needs.

Conclusion

YorPower’s rapid response and ability to provide a temporary UPS rental solution followed by a seamless permanent installation ensured that the college experienced no disruption to its operations.
