The survey is most effective when the diesel generator and associated electrical equipment are operating at a stable, representative load. How a Thermal Imaging Survey Works
Before the survey, YorPower will agree the equipment to be inspected, the reason for the inspection and any operating, access or safety requirements.
Where practicable, the generator is operated at a stable and representative load so that meaningful temperature patterns can develop. Accessible components are then scanned using a thermal camera, with relevant anomalies captured for comparison.
The findings are considered alongside:
• the electrical or mechanical load at the time of inspection;
• ambient temperature and airflow;
• the equipment type and surface being viewed;
• the behaviour of comparable phases or components; and
• any known symptoms, alarms or maintenance history.
This context is important. Thermal imaging is about recognising an unexpected difference, not simply identifying the hottest component in the system.
Thermal Imaging alongside Generator Maintenance
Thermal imaging is a valuable condition-monitoring tool, but it does not replace routine generator servicing, electrical testing, fluid checks, load bank testing or fault diagnosis by a competent engineer. It measures infrared energy from visible surfaces and cannot see through solid covers or confirm the internal condition of every component.
